Urban Exchange – Reviving the Golden Era of Hip Hop in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Celebrating the legacy and future of Hip Hop.

In 2003/2004, Nelson Mandela Bay was captivated by a powerful wave of Hip Hop, marking what is now recognized as the golden era of the genre in the city. During this period, Urban Connection—a club based in Central, Port Elizabeth—became a hub for young Hip Hop artists to channel their creative energies. True to its name, Urban Connection broke down barriers, bringing together youth from previously disadvantaged areas, rural backgrounds, and suburban neighborhoods. This unique blend of experiences and emotions fueled an electrifying scene, brimming with artistic expression.

What set Urban Connection apart was the authenticity of the artists and their hunger, passion, and unwavering drive to create art that pushed boundaries and challenged perspectives. The quality of every song, poem, and graffiti piece was paramount, shaping the identity of Bay Hip Hop—a legacy that endures to this day.

This iconic space launched the careers of notable artists such as Dangatye, Abantu, Zolani Mahola, MXO, Peebles, the late DJ Miles, J Bux, Zonke Dikana, Lelethu Mahambehlala, Nkqo, Louzy Living, Mio and Queen, the late Mr. Bozack, DJ Slyso, and many more. Urban Connection remains a source of inspiration and is often hailed as the birthplace of the Hip Hop movement in Port Elizabeth.
