Motherwell, Eastern Cape - Kasi Talks Business, an influential platform dedicated to stimulate networking among township entrepreneurs, hosted a highly successful business gathering yesterday, 14 July 2023. The event, themed "Corporate interacting with Township Economy," brought together various stakeholders, including Kasi Talks Business, ABSA, NMB Business Chamber, SEDA, and NMBM, with the aim of bridging the gap between township entrepreneurs and the corporate sector.

The audience predominantly consisted of passionate business owners from townships, representing a diverse range of enterprises, from health products to coffee brands, training and development services to transport and tour organizations. The event kicked off with Luphumlo Joka, the moderator, setting the stage by sharing insights from a Business Tech article. The article, based on Roger Wilco's 2022 Township CX Report, shed light on the untapped potential and often misunderstood nature of the vibrant township economy, which boasts a substantial spending power amounting to hundreds of billions of rands.

Siya Mandla, one of the founders and leaders of Kasi Business Talks, took the stage and immediately captured the attendees' attention. Drawing from his personal experiences, Siya emphasized the need for township entrepreneurs to have a voice in mainstream business networks. While acknowledging the importance of existing networking opportunities in the city, Siya felt that SME owners from the townships were often overlooked. This realization led to the establishment of Kasi Talks Business as a platform to unite and amplify the voices of township entrepreneurs. Siya's ultimate vision is to empower and uplift the township economy by showcasing the authentic experiences of Kasi entrepreneurship, distinct from the portrayals often seen in external research.

Recognizing the lack of connectivity among entrepreneurs in townships, Siya highlighted the importance of building strong business networks within these communities. To facilitate ongoing engagement and ensure tangible outcomes, Siya also announced the launch of intentional post-talks series, designed to provide follow-ups and drive results beyond the initial gatherings.

The panel discussion featured prominent figures such as Andisiwe Matiwane from the local municipality, Lunga Mjodo from the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, and Mawethu Mandla from ABSA. Mawethu Mandla seized the opportunity to showcase ABSA's commitment to supporting entrepreneurs through tailored banking solutions. He introduced his colleagues, who shed light on various products ABSA offers, including Will Planning and Payment Solutions, among others.

Amidst the rich interactions between SMEs and corporate representatives, the crowd was delighted to hear from Khanyisa "Zuzu" Klaas Hombile, an inspiring woman who has made a significant impact on the Nelson Mandela Bay business industry. Khanyisa shared her personal journey, recounting her humble beginnings as a municipal employee to her decision to focus on entrepreneurship. Today, she stands as a successful businesswoman, having launched her own highly sought-after lipstick line. Her presence on the panel served as a testament to the boundless potential and remarkable achievements within the township economy.

The event venue was brimming with energy and excitement, both inside and outside. Stalls showcasing a diverse array of products, including the offerings of NeoLife and Kelston Motor Groups, added to the vibrant atmosphere. Attendees were given the opportunity to pose questions, demonstrating their attentiveness and eagerness to actively engage throughout the program.

The Kasi Business Talks event was undoubtedly a resounding success, bringing together township entrepreneurs, corporate partners, and influential figures from the local community. Through this dynamic platform, Kasi Talks Business has taken a significant step towards empowering township entrepreneurs and fostering economic growth within these vibrant communities. As the discussions continue and the networks grow stronger, the untapped potential of the township economy is poised to transform into a powerful force driving South Africa's overall economic landscape.
