This month we are privileged to cover one of the best South African serial entrepreneurs Siyanda Myeni, who has emerged as a promising force with the launch of his distinctive sneaker brand, Emtwini Footwear. Born and raised in Kwandengezi, Durban, and currently residing in Johannesburg Northriding, Siyanda's entrepreneurial spirit has propelled him to create a brand that not only reflects his roots but aims to make a profound mark on the South African footwear market.
Siyanda’s brand Emtwini Footwear was established in 2022, as a South African-inspired brand designed for both men and women. The brand boasts a vibrant array of colors and innovative designs, all crafted with exceptional quality. For those who do not know, the name "Emtwini" holds a deeper meaning in Zulu slang, translating to "Within a Person." This name choice for the brand resonates with Siyanda Myeni's vision for the brand - to be deeply ingrained within the South African footwear market.
Siyanda's journey from playing soccer for the University of Witwatersrand to a successful career in Information Technology forms the foundation of his entrepreneurial story. In 2019 and 2021, he faced personal losses with the passing of both his parents. However, adversity fuelled his determination to embark on a new path. Recognizing a gap in the market for footwear in July 2021, he started with flip-flops and expanded into sneakers.
The Emtwini sneaker range features a distinctive criss-cross lace system and a comfortable thick sole, combining unique design elements with practical comfort. The brand's logo, symbolizing "Within," reinforces the idea that, no matter where you are, you'll always be connected to Emtwini. Siyanda emphasizes the brand's commitment to quality and affordability.
Siyanda faced numerous challenges typical of starting a business, from financial hurdles to negative criticism. However, he remained steadfast in pursuing his passion. In 2022, Emtwini Footwear officially took its place in the market, gaining recognition and even earning Siyanda a nomination as Founder of the Year in the FOYA awards, celebrating SMEs across Africa.
Siyanda advocates for entrepreneurs to consider seeking funding to ease the financial strain of starting and sustaining a business. Having funded Emtwini Footwear with his own salary, he understands the challenges and stresses the positive impact funding can have on business growth.
Emtwini Footwear is set to make significant moves in the coming months and years. A collaboration with Mdu, aka TRP, is scheduled for before end of 2023, promising exciting designs and styles. Also, the brand is gearing up to launch a physical store, providing customers with a tangible experience. Additionally, the return of Thong flops for the summer season adds another dimension to Emtwini's diverse product offerings.
From our side, we can confirm that Siyanda’s journey from the soccer fields of Johannesburg to the forefront of South African footwear is a testament to resilience, vision, and a passion for cultural expression. As Emtwini Footwear continues to leave its footprint, it undoubtedly stands poised to become a household name in the South African fashion scene.
