Few tales in the colorful fabric of South Africa's music industry are as vivid as that of Qaqamba Ntshinka. Raised in the charming village of eNgcobo in the Eastern Cape and currently residing in the vibrant eMfuleni in Cape Town, Qaqamba has become a well-known Afro Jazz vocalist. She has recently been nominated for a major award, Jazz Artist of the Year, at the Basadi In Music Awards.
Her musical journey began in the soulful echoes of her church, where, as a pastor’s child, she first discovered her love for singing. “I started singing at church because I am a pastor's kid, but later discovered my love for Afro Jazz Music. I fell in love with this genre and decided to pursue it in 2017,” she reminisces. Her early exposure to music in a spiritual setting laid a strong foundation for her future endeavors.
From those humble beginnings, Qaqamba's passion for Afro Jazz has grown exponentially. Her unique sound, characterized by a deep, soulful voice and an emotive delivery, has captivated audiences across Cape Town. She has performed at esteemed venues such as Selective Live, Yobo Love, Villa Viva, Trenchtown, Cape Town Stadium, Africa Grand Café V&A Waterfront, and the Bridges for Music Academy. These performances have not only honed her craft but also solidified her reputation as a rising star in the music industry.
Inspiration for Qaqamba's music often comes from the world around her, particularly the social challenges faced by her community. “I draw inspiration from social ills. Whatever is happening around me and my community, from gender-based violence, mental health, crime, etc. I grew up listening to legends like Mom Miriam Makeba, Tat'uHugh Masekela, Sis Simphiwe Dana, and Mom Busi Mhlongo,” she explains. This profound connection to her roots and the social fabric of her community infuses her music with authenticity and depth.
One of her most beloved singles, "Zizinja," stands out as a beacon of inspiration. “‘Zizinja’ serves as a melodious siren, calling out to individuals to pursue their aspirations fearlessly.” This powerful anthem resonates with many, encouraging listeners to overcome their fears and chase their dreams.
Qaqamba's talent and hard work have not gone unnoticed. In 2023, she was nominated for the Nandos Emerging Artist of the Year category at the Basadi In Music Awards. This year, she finds herself in the spotlight once again with a nomination for Jazz Artist of the Year, standing shoulder to shoulder with renowned artists like Thandi Ntuli and Aus' Tebza.
One particularly memorable moment in Qaqamba's journey was receiving praise from her childhood idol, Buhlebendalo Mda. After a recent performance, Buhlebendalo remarked, "Can't get enough of the fire you brought to that stage. Camagu my love." This acknowledgment was a poignant affirmation of Qaqamba's talent and a testament to the realization of her dreams.
Adding to her list of highlights, Qaqamba performed at the Thikho Events Business Premium Jazz Festival, which took place at Grand West Arena, opening the stage for renowned artists like Zonke Dikana, Sjava, and Mandisi Dyantyis. “This was by far the biggest performance of my entire music career,” she says.
Being nominated for Jazz Artist of the Year alongside legends such as Thandi Ntuli and Aus' Tebza is incredibly humbling and a dream come true for Qaqamba. “It feels like a validation of my hard work and dedication to Afro Jazz. Sharing this recognition with such esteemed artists motivates me to continue pushing boundaries and creating music that resonates deeply with my audience,” she shares.
When asked about any new music coming before the end of the year, Qaqamba responds enthusiastically, “Yes, the public can definitely expect new music from me before the end of the year! I'm excited to share that I've been getting guidance from ALBLK under the mentorship of Msaki in terms of where my sound is and where my sound is going.”
To young women who are still figuring out their dreams, Qaqamba offers heartfelt advice: “Stay true to yourself and be persistent. It's important to find what you are passionate about and pursue it relentlessly. Surround yourself with supportive people who believe in your vision. Don't be afraid to take risks and embrace failures as learning opportunities. Most importantly, believe in your own potential and never give up on your dreams. Tyhala ngesifuba ixesha lixhatshwe zizinja!! Chase those dreams!!”
