#PinkTuesday Breast cancer awareness parade by Madibaz Radio.

Breast cancer awareness.

In the spirit of commemorating October as the National Breast Cancer month, Madibaz Radio held a parade around campus to show support to cancer survivors. From management to show compilers, campus was painted pink as the theme for the march was under #PinkTuesdayParade.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women from all walks of life. Its lifetime risk is one in 27 around South Africa and this is a statistic from the National Cancer Registry (NCR) 2019.

Observing the role of a media house in being a tool in increasing awareness and the advocacy of early detection of breast cancer, Madibaz Radio has been running an awareness campaign way before the date of the parade. There has been a jingle that was recorded by the station ‘s team and is played regularly during show times within the station.

Creativity was all around as the parade saw new songs (Igwijo) coming up from the likes of Katlego Mofokeng who came up with the “Pink” song of the day and its vibe filled all those who were around. Campus was also filled with pink ribbons as part of the parade. This was in efforts to spread the word and remind students and staff of the Nelson Mandela University that breast cancer is real and its early detection is important. Members of the ENACTUS student organisation were out in numbers as well to show their support to the initiative.

Great scenes were in full display as the Madibaz Radio team worked wonderfully together with the ENACTUS team to spread the word regarding this type of cancer that men can also get. This was a message that one of the many plaque cards that were in display on the day said.

Talking to some of the students during the handing out of the ribbons we asked what it meant for them to put on these pink ribbons and the answer was beautifully put out as “The pink ribbon is to raise awareness about breast cancer, and it is important to wear it on the left-hand side of your breast as that is the side we usually have our oaths”. To uphold an obligation to a promise we make to the public to support breast cancer survivors was the final nail to the beautifully said words.

One of the students said cancer patients, including survivors deserve all the support in the world and there should never be a day where they are made to feel like they are different from any of us but should rather be shown love even more.

Madibaz Radio supports all cancer survivors, and we say to them, they are the heroes and heroines of today.
