The Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre (NMBSTC) is hosting Beyond the Booth Makerspace music workshop that is currently running up until the 25th of March, from 14:30 – 16:30.

This opportunity is part of the Makerspace vision that will serve as a catalyst for business growth, youth development and creative innovation. “We are building a community space dedicated towards providing youth, artists and entrepreneurs with access to state-of-the-art technology to enhance the education mobility and future economic prosperity of the Bay’s most disadvantaged communities”, said NMBSTC Outreach Practitioner, Ms. Pumza Tshebe.

The Beyond the Booth initiative provides a platform to learn from industry professionals, collaborate, distribute, and monetize own participants’ music, art, and film with the rest of the country. Participants can look forward to taking advantage of undermentioned equipment.

  • A digital classroom (computer lab) equipped with desktop computers;

A design studio equipped with equipment to build (laser cutters, 3D printer, welding machines and sewing machines), paint (acrylic paints, easels, art accessories, product backdrops), film and shoot (green screen backdrop, lighting, cameras, camcorders and film editing software);

A music recording space equipped with a sound-treated studio including a central production desk and vocal booth. We will also have individual audio workstations equipped with laptops, headphones, midi controllers and DJ equipment available for individual and group use; and

A performance and exhibition space for music performances, film-screenings, networking events, community engagements and workshops.

The offering includes individual audio workstations equipped with laptops, headphones, midi controllers and DJ equipment available for individual and group use. In addition to the space and the tools provided, NMBSTC offers free educational workshops from community partners and industry professionals that are intentionally curated to offer the most relevant content around digital learning, employment readiness, entrepreneurship, artistic development, networking, and commercializing products.

“The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) managed NMBSTC is honoured to be in partnership with Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund (CDAF), which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. NMBSTC’s Tshebe greatly benefited from participating in the International Visitor Leadership Programme held by CDAF in 2021”, said MBDA Spokesperson, Luvuyo Bangazi.

“The grant allows the Centre to strategically expand their programmes to more beneficiaries in the disadvantaged communities in Nelson Mandela Bay, thus improving the quality of life for many”, added Bangazi.

Currently, learners from Limekhaya Senior Secondary School, Solid Foundation School, John Walton Senior Secondary School, VM Kwinana Senior Secondary School, Paterson High School are participating in the Beyond the Booth programme.
