Held at the Hellenic Hall in Parsons Hill on 10th May. This annual affair that focuses on grooming young boys into men with good values, purpose and vision - including do's and don'ts of social media was an incredible engagement and informative gathering for learners from around the bay. The event hosted about 120 boys with 12 teachers from 12 different schools.
'Mentor The Boys' initiative has been one of the successful events by Brown’s PR, a PR company by Michelle Brown. Michelle, a very passionate and vibrant businesswoman who would always make time during her busy schedule to plant a seed into young upcoming leaders' lives from different backgrounds, partnered with Vodacom and other stakeholders to make sure that boys are not left behind. On her lineup this morning were Yo Media's duo - Melvin and Cameron, who touched on various topics such as digital marketing, digital footprint, and the social media bullying that often leads young people to depression. Furthermore, they encouraged the boys to take care of their social lives as it is used by employers when sourcing candidates.
Followed by Bernadette Nel-Naude, the community development officer from Atlas Security. Bernadette shared valuable tips to the boys about the importance of sober habits, especially those interested in her industry.
The boys were also joined by two wonderful young learners who are Mayor (Ryan Hol) and Deputy Mayor (Juhi Gajjar) of the Junior City Council PE. JCC practically prepares learners for various leadership roles from the high school level. They both took the opportunity to share their insights about leadership. "Being born into wealth or a position of power doesn't mean you are a leader, but anyone who perfects small leadership roles can become a leader. Also putting up your hand whenever an opportunity comes shows outstanding character and that’s a leadership skill. Good leaders create networks and more leaders", said Juhi Gajjar. The Mayor closed by sharing the challenges he faced when he was about 13 years, which made him who he is today. He spoke of how he tapped into his emotions and became stronger every day, he also spoke boldly about how failing doesn't define a person and the importance of opening up to learning always, "you're destined for better things", Ryan Hol.
Before closing, the Vodacom team facilitated a fun interactive session with the boys through Mentimeter, while introducing them to Vodacom’s products and prize giveaways. Other amazing giveaway prizes were pairs of shoes from Veldskoen.
Michelle thanked all the sponsors for making the event possible.
