Let's get to know Mandlenkosi Bill, the founder of Isonka "The Taste of Sweetness". Mandlenkosi was born and raised in Uitenhage (Silver Town), and moved to Despatch at the age of 11. In this interview, we delve into Mandlenkosi's journey as a bread brand owner, the challenges he has faced, and his plans for the future.

Mandlenkosi commenced with Isonka on the 19th of November 2022. The inspiration for starting the business came from his mother, Phumla Julia Benelwa, who bakes birthday cakes for her clients. Mandlenkosi's passion for baking grew in the kitchen, and he decided to share the skill he had been given by his mother with the world.

What challenges have you faced when at the beginning? “The need for all the basic equipment to get the production going was the main challenge, but through the grace of Izihlwele Zakwantu "Ancestors," I found part-time jobs that met my financial challenges halfway”.

Owning his own bread brand has had both good and bad impacts on Mandlenkosi's daily life. He lost many people who did not believe in the success of Isonka, even family-wise. However, their criticism about his journey shaped his mindset and gave him more reason to show them that this was what he was willing to fail for.

How has your community received your bread business? “The community has received my bread brand very well, and they are super supportive. Now my plan is to ensure that the whole of South Africa eats my bread because a business grows through the feedback of customers, be it verbally or them coming back”.

The highlight of Mandlenkosi's journey as a bread brand owner thus far is the tour the business is doing. Engaging with customers gave them a depth of what they lack and where they need to improve. In five years' time, Mandlenkosi dreams of the business employing a whole diversity of people in different communities so they can better their home situation.

When not busy with baking bread, Mandlenkosi writes music about the art of greatness that is through failure. With such an inspiring story, it's no surprise that Isonka "The Taste of Sweetness" is making waves in Mzansi.
