In an exclusive interview with Hlumelo Matshaba, an Eastern Cape-born from Cumakala and the 1st Runner-Up for Mister Supranational 2024, we chat about his inspiring journey, advocacy work, and future aspirations. Matshaba's path to success is a testament to his resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to making a difference.

Hlumelo Matshaba's journey to the Mister Supranational stage was marked by determination and self-belief. "My Mister Supranational journey was not an easy yet not so difficult journey," Matshaba reflects. "I decided to enter this pageant after having done proper research about it and realizing that the organization itself resonates with my values and principles."

The 2024 competition, however, was unique. Following the passing of National Director Mr. Wayne Stafford, the format shifted to a virtual one as a tribute to his legacy. Despite this change, Matshaba embraced the experience, finding it immensely rewarding. "It was quite an informative journey, a self-discovering journey indeed. I can proudly say I am no longer the man I was before entering that competition."

Matshaba's mindset played a crucial role in his success. "When I entered, I knew from the get-go that I wanted to win the competition. There wasn't a time where I doubted that I wanted to win." This unwavering determination fuelled his hard work and dedication, ultimately leading to his remarkable achievement as the 1st Runner-Up.

Beyond the glitz and glamour of pageantry, Matshaba is a passionate advocate for mental health, focusing on depression and anxiety. As a two-time depression and suicide survivor, he understands the profound impact of mental health challenges. "According to the 2023 Mental Health World Report, South Africa is one of the lowest-ranked nations in terms of mental health scores. Young boys are at an increased risk of being depressed and taking their lives."

In response to this alarming trend, Matshaba founded Thetha Nam, a foundation dedicated to providing a safe space for young boys to discuss their emotions, seek support, and ultimately prevent suicides. "I want these boys to understand that there are people who care about their well-being. I've started this foundation to give what I couldn't get for a very long time."

Matshaba's commitment to giving back extends to the Johannesburg Child Day Care Centre, where he has been actively involved for the past three years. "This centre looks after babies from a very young age, and it is situated in the heart of the city. More often, I spend my time here helping out everywhere I possibly can with what I have."

He emphasizes that giving back is not just about monetary contributions. "You can give back with what you have, be it old clothes you no longer use, old shoes, or your time. Time is the most precious thing one can give back with."

His career is filled with memorable moments, but one that stands out is an interview he conducted while doing an Outside Broadcast (OB) with the late George Bizos, a renowned Greek-South African human rights lawyer who campaigned against apartheid. "It was an honour to sit down with someone who defended the likes of Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, and Walter Sisulu at the Rivonia Trial."

His passion for acting has also shaped his character. "A role of a doctor on 'Ufelani' on Moja Love 157 is the role that I enjoyed the most. Acting has made me more honest, disciplined, hard-working, and dedicated. It has taught me to recognize dishonesty very fast because acting is all about truth."

Looking ahead, Matshaba is set to represent South Africa in the upcoming Mr. Universe competition in India in August 2024, a significant milestone following his success at Mister Supranational. "This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I will forever be grateful for it. It is every model's dream to represent their country on a global stage."

In addition to his modelling career, Matshaba aspires to showcase his talent on major commercial radio stations and grow Thetha Nam foundation to continental and global heights. "Right now, I am excited about my upcoming trip to India. I am working hard in the gym, ensuring that I am in good shape when the time comes."

Hlumelo Matshaba's journey is a powerful narrative of resilience, advocacy, and ambition. From overcoming personal challenges to making significant strides in his career and philanthropic endeavors, Matshaba embodies the spirit of perseverance and hope. As he continues to reach new heights, his story serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with determination and a commitment to making a difference, anything is possible.
