In South Africa's music scene, few names shine as brightly as Ntsika Fana Ngxanga's. He is a revered artist known not only for his mesmerizing melodies but also for his steadfast commitment to his roots and the powerful messages his music carries. Rising to prominence as a key member of the globally acclaimed group "The Soil," Ntsika has embarked on a captivating solo journey, enchanting audiences with his soul-stirring sound and unwavering dedication to his craft.
Back in 2011 and 2012, Ntsika, along with The Soil, took South Africans on an enchanting musical voyage with unforgettable hits such as "Thambo Lami," "Hamba Uyosebenza," and "Inkomo." Fast forward to today, Ntsika continues to bless his fans with music that transcends boundaries, drawing from his own experiences, spirituality, and deep connection to his heritage.
In an exclusive interview we recently had with him, Ntsika shared his insights on maintaining a lasting presence in the music industry while staying true to his artistic vision. With a remarkable knack for consistently delivering top-tier music and a quiet but steadfast dedication, Ntsika's journey shines a light on the path of musical longevity.
"Firstly, thank you so much for the compliment hidden nicely in your question," Ntsika responded with humility when we asked him about his enduring success and low-profile demeanour. "I have always been someone who places great importance on solitude. Mine comes bearing so many beautiful fruits – it keeps me away from unnecessary distractions in the public eye, and it aligns me perfectly with God and my Ancestors, from whom I derive my gift."
Addressing the view that music is often considered merely a hobby, Ntsika asserts that it's a matter of perspective and approach. "All it takes is constant research and trying new things and building on those that work," he explains. Founding his own company, Nomadic Tribe, Ntsika transformed his passion into a business by establishing a publishing hub, recording label, and events management company. "When I realized that the recording element wasn't as lucrative, I scaled the company back to being just a publishing and events company," he reveals, highlighting his adaptive and pragmatic business sense.
Do you believe the South African entertainment industry is doing enough to groom artists in running their brands as a business? Ntsika’s response to the music industry's role in grooming artists as entrepreneurs sparks an insightful discussion. "I come from a time where I would find information when I sought it out," Ntsika reflects, emphasizing the importance of self-guided learning. He suggests that while the industry provides platforms, it could do more by promoting these initiatives. "Artists also need the drive to seek information," Ntsika adds, acknowledging the mutual responsibility between artists and the industry.
As we continued our conversation, we wanted to hear a bit about Ntsika’s roots and his connection to music. Touching into his spiritual connection to music and his roots, Ntsika shared profound insights. "We all end up where we were meant to be. That's how destiny works," he remarked. Staying true to his roots enables him to transmit his gift from a spiritual frequency that resonates with authenticity. "My calling is sacred and important for generations to come," Ntsika passionately explained. "Listening in stillness allows me to heal people globally through my music."
Another remarkable aspect of Ntsika is how he is always open to working with new talent in the industry. His commitment to nurturing emerging talent radiates through his collaborations, and we asked him to share more about that. "I realized that a candle used to light another loses no flame," he poetically stated. Acknowledging those who ignited his journey, Ntsika is dedicated to supporting talented individuals who only need a slight nudge to shine.
We also spoke about Ntsika’s connection with Gqeberha, as it is palpable. "Gqeberha is pretty much my home at this time," Ntsika warmly revealed. He humorously mentioned the possibility of buying land there due to the strong resonance he shares with the city and its people. His favorite haven is Sardinia Bay Beach, where the tranquility of family beach picnics embraces him.
Make sure to mark October 4th on your calendar as an exciting event for Gqeberha. Ntsika will be taking the stage with "The Gathering," a live show at the Athenaeum (Little Theatre).
As South Africa celebrates heritage month, Ntsika encourages young creatives to cherish their roots. "Being mindful of and preserving our heritage is our superpower," he declared. Writing and documenting it in their work becomes a way to pass this power to future generations.
Ntsika's path toward the long-term sustainability of his music career is multi-faceted. "Staying true to the gift, collaborating authentically, and exploring new environments beyond the industry's circular spaces," he articulated. His desire to reach a global audience is palpable, transcending the shores of Alkebulan (Africa).
Before we wrapped up, we asked him about his favourite vacation destination. "It would have to be Gqeberha," he exclaimed, painting a vivid picture of idyllic Eastern Cape treasures like Jeffrey's Bay Beach and Tsitsikamma.
Finally, when the rhythm of music takes a pause, Ntsika finds solace in family time, series marathons, Premier League football, and heartwarming family gatherings over glasses of wine.
Ntsika Fana Ngxanga's story is one of depth, resilience, and artistic integrity. As he continues to shape the cultural and musical landscape, Ntsika reminds us that the power of music extends beyond the melodies—it's a journey of the heart, soul, and heritage.
