We had an opportunity to speak to one of the JAZZ ARTIST OF THE YEAR nominees, AusTebza. Those who know her will confirm that she is one of the names that sticks out in the bustling South African music industry with a resonance as deep and captivating as the bass notes she plays. She was born Tebogo Sedumedi and has been one of the top bass musicians in the nation for more than 20 years. But she's on a far longer path than just being a session musician.

From her early days, AusTebza's talent was undeniable. She has shared the stage with some of South Africa's top superstars, lending her exceptional bass skills to their performances. Yet, her contributions to the music industry are not confined to playing bass. She has also made her mark as a songwriter, vocalist, and music director. Reflecting on her extensive career, she recalls with pride her decade-long tenure playing for the late Hip Hop Pantsula, as well as her roles as music director for the Mbokotho Awards and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Music has always been an intrinsic part of AusTebza's life, that we can tell. "Music has always been my thing," she shares with a smile. "I used to sing along to records from the tender age of two. Even before that, my mother would tell stories of how they would put a radio next to me as an infant to stop me from crying, and it worked like a charm every single time. When I was slightly older, I would dance to any record that came on, even if it was at a shopping complex."

In 2015, AusTebza embarked on a new chapter in her musical journey by releasing her debut solo album. This marked the beginning of a prolific period for her as a solo artist. She explains, "Starting my solo career was a significant turning point for me. It was both terrifying and exhilarating to step out from behind the bass and present my own voice and vision."

Earlier this year, AusTebza released a new single titled "Mmangwane." This song is particularly special to her. "I wrote 'Mmangwane' during a time when I was deeply missing someone important to me," she says. "The song is a sonic representation of that longing. Through it, I hope to encourage others to press on, even through difficult times."

You are performing on Doek On Fleek now in July, what can the audience expect from you and how do you feel being part of the event? "The exciting thing about being part of Doek On Fleek is the audience will get to experience AusTebza the Music Director. I will be performing with all the incredible artists and musicians that are on the lineup. This is specifically curated for this festival to allow the audience to have a different feel of the lineup."

Your JAZZ ARTIST OF THE YEAR nomination in BASADI IN MUSIC AWARDS, what does it mean to you? "To be nominated for a Basadi music award simply says my work is seen and appreciated. This means my followers are the defining factor as they made sure I make it all the way through. It is encouraging when your work gets recognized because it speaks directly to your dream, purpose, and plan."

Lastly, any new projects people can look forward to from you yet? "At the moment I am still enjoying 'MMANGWANE' and I am about to drop a music video for the same song. However, I will be releasing an album in January which will have songs I have been writing for the past year or so. Otherwise, I’ll be working on collaborations with musicians, production houses, and playing live on various stages."

As we wrap up the conversation, we can all agree that AusTebza's story continues to be one of enduring passion and dedication to music. It inspires many, and her contributions to the South African music industry are undeniably significant. As she steps forward, her resonance only grows deeper, captivating the hearts of her music followers.
