On the 21st of December 2023, Brighton Bistro – a local restaurant located in New Brighton Gqeberha, became a canvas of cultural celebration as Abantu Development Agency unfolded the vibrant tapestry of their annual History Reimagined gathering. Nestled in an informal and vibey setup, the atmosphere resonated with the rich sounds and artistic expressions that encapsulated the essence of the Eastern Cape's cultural heritage. The focal point of the gathering was the live listening session of the double album, a culmination of a transformative journey that commenced in April.
The afternoon commenced with the enchanting verses of Dongadala, a remarkable Nelson Mandela Bay poet. His words, a tribute to Zahara, echoed through the air, setting the tone for an afternoon of profound cultural resonance. Dongadala's performance not only captivated the audience but also foreshadowed the artistic brilliance that was to unfold throughout the event.
Taking center stage was Leletu and Yahkeem from Ephondweni Podcast Team, orchestrating a live podcast that seamlessly blended interviews with the featured musicians on the album and enchanting musical performances. The air was filled with the mesmerizing Xhosa sounds, a testament to the careful curation of the History Reimagined album. Between engaging discussions and live performances, the audience found themselves immersed in a sonic journey that transcended boundaries.
As the podcast chair hosted Asanda Mqiki, the narrative of 'Ngqoko' unfolded with grace. Mqiki, teamed with Thembi Mona on this exquisite composition, shared insights into the exclusive nature of Ngqoko, a dish used mostly in Xhosa householdes, especially in rurals. Her gratitude for being part of the Reimagined History Album was palpable, underscoring the collaborative spirit that defined the project.
The eclectic audience, including Ekse Community radio and Luks Gidane from Umhlobo Wenene Fm, added to the vibrancy of the gathering. The live broadcast by Lux featured remarkable individuals such as Poeticsoul from Ephondweni Podcast, Asanda Bam, a musician, Xola Speelman from The Konvenient magazine, and Sakhi Nompozolo, a skilled drummist. Their presence reinforced the community-driven ethos that permeated the event.
The genesis of the double album traced back to a transformative journey in April, where ten talented artists embarked on a quest to explore AmaXhosa indigenous songs and sounds. Engqoko Village and Sterkspruit became classrooms, and the Ngqoko Women Ensemble, a powerhouse of inspiration. The resulting double album, a testament to this transformative experience, encapsulated the artists' responses to the rich cultural tapestry they encountered.
Proudly made possible through the support of the National Heritage Council and the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, the project was a harmonious collaboration that celebrated the love of Oomama base Ngqoko. The album, a masterpiece of cultural fusion, is now available on all digital platforms, inviting the world to join in the celebration of History Reimagined – a journey of sounds, stories, and the enduring spirit of the Eastern Cape.
